William D. Cary, Sr., 88, of Cobleskill died Monday, January 7, 2013 at his residence in the company of his loving family.
Born June 26, 1924 in Fort Edward, NY, he was the son of A. Heywood and Mary (Henderson) Cary.
Bill proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1944 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. He had the distinction of serving in the honor guard for General Patton's funeral. Bill was a lifetime member of the Schenevus VFW Post #2752.
For twenty-seven years he was employed as a technical assistant at SUNY Cobleskill. He was a member of the former Seward Valley Grange, initiated the Seward Little League, was active in the Boy Scouts, and volunteered in the Cobleskill area for Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc.
He and his wife, Joyce, lived many winters in Seabring, FL for eight years where they volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, Seabring Nursing Home, and Children's Home.
Bill was also a member of the Warnerville United Methodist Church where he formerly served as a trustee.
He was predeceased by a son: Jeffrey A. Cary on April 19, 2006.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce ( Slater) Cary, whom he married October 26, 1947; two children: William D. Cary, Jr. of Cobleskill, Michael A. (Susan) Cimino-Cary of Cobleskill; four grandchildren: Heather E. Cary of Gulf Port, FL, Susan (Jason) Palmer of Townsend, MA, Valerie M. (Julie) MacPherson of Rochester, and April Cary of Brooklyn; two great-grandchildren: Ryan Joseph Palmer of Townsend, MA and Liam James MacPherson of Rochester; two sisters: Mary Alice Spaulding of Hudson Falls, and Marcia Bunzey of Cobleskilll; and a brother: Carius (Willie) Cary of Prescott Valley, AZ.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. Officiating will be Rev. Victor R. Zaccaro. Family and friends are also invited to attend a period of visitation to be held at the funeral home prior to the service, from 10 to 11 AM. Spring inurnment will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.
