Richmondville- Alice Mickel passed away at age 92 on Sunday, April 30, 2006, at her home in the Town of Richmondville. She was born July 11, 1913 in Patria, the daughter of Timothy and Ethel (Fancher) Clapper, and lived her entire life in this area. She was the widow of Milo Mickel, Jr., who died in 1981.
After graduating from the Normal School in Cobleskill, she taught in a one room schoolhouse in Patria for a time and was also employed for many years as a cafeteria worker in the Cobleskill Central School system, but for most of her life she was a homemaker. She was happiest caring for her family and fixing their favorite foods. She canned and froze the produce from a large garden each year and was well known for her pickles, jams, jellies and pies. She was the oldest member of the Warnerville United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Bolton of Severna Park, MD; a son, Roger of the home; sister, Leta Beach of Delmar; brother, Harry of West Fulton; eight grandchildren: Kelly Baumann of Cobleskill, Laura Rounds and Debra Kleinberger of Florida; Michael Bolton of Virginia; Melanny Mickel, who cared for her grandmother at home since 2004; Mark Bolton of Connecticut; Kathryn Monroe of Castleton; Timothy Mickel of Ballston Spa; 16 great-grandchildren,7 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Another great-grandchild, Nicholas, died as a toddler.
A funeral service will be held at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, May 3, at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home 171 Elm Street Cobleskill with Rev. Marvin Batcher and Rev. Victor R. Zaccaro co-officiating. Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery. Following the service, friends and relatives may call the the home.
